HPP Conference: 24th-25th September, The Value of the Humanities

On the 24th-25th September 2017 the Humane Philosophy Project organised a conference on the Value of the Humanities. Talks examined possible justifications for work in the arts and humanities, and for public funding of that work.

Keynote speakers:

Dr Alicja Gescinska (philosopher and public intellectual)

Professor Sandy Stoddart (the Queen's Sculptor in Ordinary in Scotland)

Professor Sir Roger Scruton (philosopher and novelist)

Professor Raymond Tallis (neuroscientist and polymath)

This conference marked the conclusion of the 2016-2017 AHRC-funded research group on the value of the humanities at the University of Cambridge, and also included several short papers by members of the group with specialists in art-history, classics, history, philosophy, and engineering.

This event was supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, UK; the Institute of Philosophy at the University of Warsaw; and the Dalai Lama Centre for Compassion, Oxford, and Blackfriars Hall, University of Oxford.
